The Dyer Care Center (DCC) is the first-ever facility in Prince George’s County, MD, to provide short-term personalized emergency crisis services to adults experiencing a mental health and/or substance use crisis. The center implements the Gold Standard, SAMHSA preferred CrisisNow model.
With this 23-hour outpatient facility, community members will have access to these vital services at any time, regardless of their ability to pay. The DCC provides accessible, behavioral health crisis care, helping residents avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and relieving law enforcement, EMS, and emergency rooms of crisis care duties.
The DCC is committed to both “rapid engagement” of anyone seeking emergency behavioral health care, ensuring a warm, welcoming, and secure atmosphere for all our guests. Our “peer first, peer last” approach means that from the moment of arrival, our guests are greeted and supported by peer support specialists who truly understand their experiences. Following this initial connection, behavioral health clinicians and medical team assess and address immediate behavioral and physical health needs, working collaboratively with guests to meet their ongoing social, emotional, and clinical needs. Most guests will be discharged, or referred to the appropriate level of care, within 23 hours.
Funded by HSCRC Behavioral Health Catalyst grant through Totally Linking Care in Maryland (TLC-MD), a nonprofit 6-member hospital coalition serving Southern Maryland, the DCC is operated by RI International, a behavioral healthcare not-for-profit that pioneers and operates 24/7/365 emergency crisis stabilization centers in 10 states across the US.
The Dyer Care Center (DCC) operates under the four core principles of RI International, which are:
We strongly believe that safety – and the feeling of being safe – is critical for all human beings. We create and maintain safety through our policies, processes, facilities, and personnel, including privacy screening for entrances and exits; onsite county-staffed security personnel; 24/7 illuminated outdoor areas; and secured doors and sally ports to prevent guests in crisis from leaving unnoticed, and to restrict access to the facility by unauthorized entrants.
Our Peer-Powered Services are at the forefront of transforming lives through the power of shared experience and triumph. Through shared understanding, respect, and mutual empowerment, our peer support team in collaboration with our interdisciplinary team is dedicated to meet our guests’ psychological, emotional, social, and clinical needs.
Upon arrival at our facility, all guests in need of services will swiftly undergo assessment and admission. This expedited entry process is spearheaded by peer support specialists who work in concert with mental health clinicians to quickly evaluate the immediate needs of each guest and facilitate their journey towards receiving care.
All DCC staff are certified, trained, and re-trained annually in customer service, de-escalation techniques, and other crucial skills. Our facilities set specific goals and track measurable results for our guests and for the center itself.
